Beautiful blonde haired American actress and comedienne. A popular friend of many who worked at the Hal Roach Studios, including Charley Chase whom she co-starred with eleven times between 1929-1931 before playing second fiddle to ZaSu Pitts in her own series of two-reel shorts between 1931-1933. She finally became the lead actress in a new series with Patsy Kelly in 1933 which she would continue to star in until her death in 1935. The last three films she made were all released after her death. The films she starred in generally ranged from average to very good. On-screen she wasn't shy about getting most of her clothes off either although sometimes it felt a bit unnecessarily convenient. I have always found this a shame that she felt the need to rely on showing too much cleavage instead of her focus on her comedy. She was found dead inside her car in a locked garage where she lived with her partner Roland West in Los Angeles, and although her official cause of death was recorded as carbondioxide poisoning there have been many theories regarding her death - was it an accident, suicide or murder? Despite the general consensus that her death was simply an unfortunate accident the fact remains that to this day nobody knows for sure. She is buried in Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA (Plot: Section 19, L-5548). Some sources list a birth year of 1905. |
