| Amercian actress, the mother of Our Gang stars Allen 'Farina' Hoskins and Jannie Hoskins. Her sister was Edith Fortier. Her father, Allen Victor Fortier (1872-1947), was a teamster and a junk dealer. It looks like her mother (Mary V.) and older sister Esther died before 1908, as her Dad is married (2 yrs.) to Mamie V. (born in Georgia) in the 1910 Census when FLORENCE is listed as 10 years old. In Jan.1920 Census (Chelsea, MA), she is already married to CLAY H. HOSKINS (1884-1969), a self-employed landscaping contractor and she is a self-employed music teacher at home, having completed 4 years of high school. Son, Allen Clayton ("FARINA") will be born there on August 9th. 1922 Compton, CA City Directory (Ancestry.com): CLAYTON HOSKINS is a "builder" living with wife FLORENCE at 700 S. Wilmington, Watts, CA. 1929: on Mar.22, a marriage license is issued in San Diego to "FLORENCE A. HOPKINS (30) and LORENZO D. MATHONICAN (29), both of Los Angeles". ("San Diego Evening Tribune 23 Mar.1929") 1930 Census: 923 E. 33rd St., LA. FLORENCE is a self-employed music teacher and LORENZO is employed as a real estate agent. They own their own $5,000 mortgage-free home. JANEY and "FARINA" are attending school. 1940 Census: 923 E. 33rd St., LA: house worth $2,000. FLORENCE is aged 38 (lost 2 years): divorced (probably got house in divorce). She is a High School grad: self-employed real estate agent who worked 52 weeks in 1939 and 60 hours in the week preceding the April 1st (1940) Census. She has outside income (probably alimony), but you can't tell what her total income is because "they" don't list it for self-employed persons. JANE(Y) and "FARINA" are both in school. She has completed 3 yrs. HS and he has completed 1 yr. of college. 1940 Aug 28:son,"FARINA", enlists in the US Army as an electrician from civil life with 1 yr. college. He serves until 6 Aug 1945. Los Angeles, July 13 (1926): Mrs. Florence Hoskins secured a divorce from Clayton Hoskins on cruelty grounds. "Farina," who is six years old, and Jane F. Hoskins, his three-year-old sister, appeared in court and corroborated the mother's story. |
