His naturalization records, his World War II draft registration card, and his entry in the Social Security Death Index all give his date of birth as the 21st, as opposed to the 27th which is given on his death certificate/California Death Index entry (provided by a second-hand informant -- namely, fellow actor Hal Taggart) and is thus incorrectly parroted as such by most online sources.
