American actor. The birth and death information posted above is correct after "sifting" through various records and newspaper discrepancies. He had 9 sisters who grew to adulthood which resulted in his being included in 42 Ancestry.com family trees. About half of them have him dying in 1946 and born in Oklahoma. Absent finding a newspaper obituary and finding only transcripts of his Death Certificate with discrepancies I pieced together the 1966 Death year. Famous "gossip columnist", Louella Parsons, in her 1950 column on the death of Lloyd's actress wife reported that he had "died 4 years ago". (No specific date or place are given).
The 1954 obituary of his Mom, Florence Knox, survivors listed by name and residence are her daughters and son Lloyd of Los Angeles. The 1971 obit of one of his sisters lists the other sisters by name but no brother. In 1942, his Mom signed an "official" State of Arkansas "delayed" Birth Certificate with his 1897 AR birth. Other sources give 1898 and 1901 births in OK. In the 1950 Census for Downey, CA he is in the Norwalk State Hospital "unable to work" and "married". His wife, silent movie serial actress, Helen Holmes, died in July 1950 about 2 months after the Census but is not listed in the Census at her Burbank, CA address where she died. The Death Certificate says she was "divorced". Despite all the sources that say she died of a "heart attack", her DC says she died of "pulmonary tuberculosis" for which she was under a doctor's care for over 4 years. There is no mention of "heart problems". Her father and brother died of the disease. She was an intimate friend of Mabel Normand, who died of TB in 1930. Lloyd was arrested in NYC in May of 1924 as he was about to board a ship for London, UK to perform in an American rodeo at Wembley Stadium with other "champion" rodeo cowboys. In Oklahoma, he had recently sold a number of prize hogs to a farmer. All the hogs died and Lloyd postponed settling up with the man so the farmer had the local sheriff wire NYC with an arrest warrant. Since the ship was about to sail, he wired $300 to the OK farmer and charges were dropped. In March of 1925, Lloyd was performing in a huge multi-day livestock show and rodeo in Ft. Worth, TX. There he met movie serial actress Helen Holmes who was the guest celebrity "queen" of the rodeo. They had a whirlwind 2-week romance and got married in either Ft. Worth or Ponca City, OK depending upon which news-paper account you read. His nickname was "the Beau Brummell of the profession". In addition to their careers, they raised and trained animals for the movies into the 1930's and 1940's. |
