Black American actress with a brief film career in the 1920s. I could only find two Black women named Elizabeth Mackey (or Mackie) living in the Los Angeles area during the 1920s -- neither of whom I can connect to any acting or film work via census or vital records. I am going with the Elizabeth profiled here based on age, as the other Elizabeth would have only been in her twenties at the time of the film appearances noted below. Her parents were Mary (Chanclor) and George Williams, both of South Carolina. Around 1893, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Williams married William Roy Mackey (1875-1972). They would have (at least) nine children, four of whom would live past their twenties. Some newspaper articles pertaining to the cast of "Dr. Jack" list her as "'Auntie' Mackey," most notably a joking letter of "indignation" reprinted in the Los Angeles Times and signed by the supporting cast. However, the vast majority of the articles I've found misspell her last name as "Mackay," and unfortunately that's the spelling that has persisted. The Apr 1877 birth date listed above comes from the 1900 Census. Her death certificate leaves the "date of birth" section blank (perhaps her husband, the informant, wasn't sure), but gives an age of 51 (thus suggesting a birth year of 1876). |
