18 July 1918 San Francisco, California, United States of America |
died:
25 September 1974 Los Angeles County, California, United States of America (age 56) |
Brunette American child actress of the 1920s. Jean's various ads in "The Standard" casting directories give her phone number as "HE mpstead 9078"; in "Kelts' Geographical Directory, Los Angeles, September, 1927, Vol. 1," a match can be found for D. L. Johnston, phone no. HE 9078, residing at 7618 Lexington. In November 1923, Jean is age 5; by next November (1924), she is age 6; by July 1925, she is age 7; by February 1927, she is age 8. Her parents were Eda Caroline (Prien) Johnston (1888-1959) and Daniel Lawson Johnston (1887-1955), who married on 4 June 1913 in San Francisco, California. Jean was born five years later and appears to have been their only child. Daniel worked as a traffic manager and salesman for a pipe company and as an automobile salesman, while Eda would work as a film laboratory technician for MGM. In 1922, Eda filed for divorce from Daniel, citing extreme cruelty; however, they evidently reconciled and are still together in the 1930 Census... but not for long. Eda filed for divorce again in late 1931; this time, the decree was granted. Jean later graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), as one of the Class of 1939; she served as class secretary, and was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, Alpha Iota Chapter. By May 1940 (Census), 21-year old Jean is in Palm Springs, California and is a teacher at a public school. On 15 March 1943, Jean married Paul Meredith Rogers (1915-1983), a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, in Las Vegas, Nevada. At the time, Jean was a third-grade teacher at the Frances S. Stevens School in Palm Springs, California. She and Paul had two sons: William Wesley Rogers (b. 1946) and Dean Douglas Rogers (b. 1954). In the 1950 Census (Los Angeles, 4 Apr), Jean is still a teacher at a grade school, while Paul is an assignment clerk for a telephone company; with them is 3-year old William. When Jean V. Rogers passed away in 1974, she was survived by husband Paul, sons William and Dean, and a grandson. She is buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California. |
