BEYOND THE BACK LOT SECTION: SANTA FE STATION / SOUTHERN PACIFIC DEPOT |
They filmed frequently at two nearby stations. The grand Southern Pacific Depot had massive formal columns out front, but the back was dense with tracks and covered boarding platforms, which made it difficult to get clear shots. The Santa Fe depot was used much more frequently. It was much smaller, but the tracks were on the ground, with no platforms and few awnings, so there was plenty of room to film, and plenty of room to walk around, fall on the ground, and do other comedic bits. In some films, like Harold Lloyd's Girl Shy, they'd arrive in town at the back of the Santa Fe depot, but would be shown departing from the front of the Southern Pacific Depot. ~ John Bengston. |
