British comic actor; an only child born into a wealthy family. His Dad was a lawyer and in the 1911 Census of England, the family had a live-in cook, housemaid and nurse. A 1926 ship's manifest shows
him coming to the US as a 23 year-old "cotton broker". His 1941 Declaration of Intention doesn't reflect this but has him arriving in New York City in 1936 as a single "interior decorator" and he requests a legal name to "Rex Evans". His 1942 WWII Draft Card gives his height as 6'3" and weighing 310 lbs. and living with his Mom, Gertrude, and operating his "own business" at another address.
In the 1940 Los Angeles Census he is a motion picture actor living next door to director John Ford. Rex is with his divorced Mother, Gertrude, and their housemaid. He says he earned $3000 in 1939 and had completed 4 years of college. In the 1950 Census he is a "theatre actor" living with his 32 year-old "partner", James Weatherford, who works as a secretary for a magazine. |
