Snub is an street sweeper with OCD, living in a neighborhood full of fussy people. He is sweeping the street when he anticipates a cop who is about to throw some litter into the road and dashes over to catch it in his cart. He then tries to save a drunken man from falling into the road before stopping his cart to pick up a solitary leaf which has dared to fallen upon the ground. The eccentric and obsessed street sweeper meticulously disposes of the leaf but when he turns around he finds half the tree has shed its leaves at that very moment. That's enough of a reason for him to remonstrate with the tree and quit his job there on the spot. As luck would have it Snub comes upon a house with a "gardener wanted" sign in the front yard. The owner tells him he has the job but to respect the fact that every blade of grass on the lawn is considered as a pet. Along comes a film crew hoping to set up their equipment in order to shoot a battle scene in the front garden but encounter a tree where they need to shoot - so out it comes! The crew begin filming with the lead actress but Snub keeps getting in the way of the shot and doesn't realise that the guy assaulting her is only acting. Snub tries to stop the violence but the director keeps stopping him. Finally one of the actors quits and hands Snub a uniform so that Snub can take his place in the movie. Snub's first scene is to kick in the front door to rescue the girl but the director reminds him it is "all for art's sake". The picket fence to the property is the next to go when the entire cast fall through it simultaneously. As they continue filming Snub pleads with the director not to ruin anything else on the property but then destroys the porch with a stunt. The owner returns home to find his house destroyed but Snub explains to them that it is "all for art's sake". |
Favourite bit Snub picking up single leaves before the whole tree lets go. |
Trivia • Copyrighted November 2, 1921. • The film company who turn up to shoot their movie is called "The Disastrous Film Company". My opinion • It's everything you'd expect from a Snub Pollard film, except slightly better than usual. |
