A popular Hollywood still and publicity photographer, and also an assistant director at Roach during the early 1920s. When interviewed in John Kobal's book "The Art of the Great Hollywood Portrait Photographers: 1925-1940," Lacy recalled that he "had about nine occupations [at Roach] besides taking stills." In Lacy's own book "Leg Art" (with Don Morgan; Citadel Press, 1981), he further recalled that after working for D.W. Griffith's studio for about a year and a half, "I moved on to Hal Roach studios and became a jack of all trades. I'd put on makeup and play an extra or do a bit role. I'd assist anyone who needed assistance." After proving himself and his photography skills to Roach, he became Harold Lloyd's still photographer for four years, also performing such duties on other Roach films including the Snub Pollard, Our Gang, and Vanity Fair Girls series (helping to audition the girls for the latter series via still photos; the series proved Lacy's first foray into his later specialty of "leg art"), with the assistance of Gene Kornman. Lacy further remembered, "And I was also an assistant director. And I ran the studio still laboratory, developing, printing, and distributing. And I ran errands. And I drove cars to locations. And I was a unit manager, a business manager, an associate producer, occasionally a second-unit director, and anything else that was being done by someone who happened to be home sick." Lacy quit the Roach studio after a run-in with C.H. Roach, the company treasurer and Hal's father, where the elder Roach accused Lacy of over-spending on a beach film Lacy was assistant director on.
In terms of his birth date, he seemed to go back and forth between 01 and 02 August. The latter is what's given in his birth records, as well as the Social Security Death Index.
He was married to Lois Lindsay.
Sometimes went by the name of M.S. Lacey.
