Lilymae Wilkinson |
born: 13 July 1897 Aurora, Illinois, United States of America |
died: 18 June 1967 Los Angeles, California, United States of America (age 69) |
American actress, who was one of the Vanity Fair Girls in the like-named Hal Roach series starring Eddie Boland. Her parents were Alvin M. (1861-1936) and Louise Sophia (Coleman/Kollman/Collman) Wilkinson (1862-1951). She had several siblings: Nettie A. (Jaka, Strong, Jaka) (1885-1976), Edna M. (Thompson) (1885-?; possibly d. pre-1951), Mildred E. (Jaka, McMillen) (1888-1974), Fern Irene (Swain) (1890-1980), Lester Alvin "Pat" (1895-1974), Lyle McKinley (1897-1952), Clifford L. (c. 1904-?) and Viola Ruth (Serafin) (1905-1996). Due to some documents pertaining to Lyle, who was Lilymae's twin brother, we also have a probable birth year of 1896. Before heading to Hollywood, she worked as a clerk (succeeding a Miss Susie Hoffman) at the Bell (Telephone Co.) Club of Lansing, Michigan and as an accountant at a truck factory in Alma, Michigan (the latter is her profession in the 1920 Census, taken January 1920; her first known Roach film, June Madness, didn't start filming until June, giving her plenty of time to make it to California). The Alma Record, 08 Dec 1920, states: "Lilymae Wilkinson, a former employe [sic] of the Republic [Motor Truck Company], and very well known in Alma, is with the Rolin Film Co., who will also make the famous Harold Lloyd comedies. Comedies in which she appears will be shown every alternate week on Tuesday and Wednesday, beginning next week." She also acted under the name "Lilymae (or Lily Mae) Lyle," including a stint as leading lady for Lige Conley at Educational in early 1923. As "Lilymae Lyle" (which she also went under in the 1930 Census), she married motorcycle cop Roy L. Scott (1897-1965) two days before Christmas 1930; they had one son, Roy Leigh Scott (1935-1997). The couple divorced between 1940 and 1944; on April 28 of the latter year, Lily, now a nurse, married Sherman Devant Rutledge (1896-1952). He was granted a divorce from her in June 1950, but she kept the Rutledge name at the time of her own death. She shaved six years off her age at the time of her death. |
