American child actor, the brother of David Campbell. Their father, Lloyd Campbell (1891-1937), was a film editor and cutter who worked at the Hal Roach Studios on the "Our Gang" series in the mid-late 1920s. In 1941, he was working for the Warner Brothers studio in their location department when he enlisted in the Army for World War II service. He returned about a year later after being wounded overseas, with a newspaper article (Citizen-News, 28 Oct 1942) deeming him "the first Warner Bros. studio employe [sic] to return after having been badly wounded in action. The youth plans to return, however, because he says he has a personal score to settle." Though eligible for a medical discharge, Campbell is quoted in the article as saying, "But I'm going back. . . . I have some great pals in the Army and we have a lot to do." Included with the article is a photo of WB starlet Joan Leslie giving Jack her identification tag. Jack's World War II draft registration card (dated 26 July 1945; serial number N-540-A, order number 14671-A) notes he has "Scar[s] on [his] right hip, right knee, right leg, left wrist, and forehead." Possibly, these were the result of his war wounds mentioned above? A record exists noting Jack later enlisted for the Army Corps of Engineers ("Enlistment for Hawaiian Department") on 25 November 1946, his rank being Sergeant. In late 1960, a 20-year old driver lost control of his vehicle and both hit Jack's parked car and crashed into Jack's house! The driver and his 16-year old female passenger were slightly injured but survived. The crash destroyed Jack's living room furniture and damages were estimated at $2,000 (that's equivalent to a bit over $21,000 in 2024 when adjusted for inflation), but thankfully, no one in the house was injured. In some reports, Jack was referred to as "M-Sgt. John G. Campbell." His home was at 7533 Clybourn Ave., Sun Valley, North Hollywood, California. David's obituary in the Los Angeles Times (09 May 1962) refers to Jack, again, as "Master Sgt. John Campbell, U.S. Army." After his own passing in 1982, Jack was interred at Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California. |
