Hazel Newman

American actress. Per Variety (15 Dec 1926, Los Angeles section), she "won the personality contest in the '[Los Angeles] Examiner's' 'Miss Los Angeles 1926' contest . . . Since winning the personality contest Miss Newman has been appearing here [in L.A.] in pictures." Her parents were Madeline (Greenberg) (1883-1969) and Maurice Newman (1881-1951), and she had an older brother, David Louis Newman (1905-1988). Hazel was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where her mother had been born, and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, the birthplace of both her father and her brother. On 2 February 1927, Hazel married Fred Bernard Provol (1901-1968) of Salt Lake City, Utah; Fred owned and managed the Hudson Bay Fur Co. clothing store in Salt Lake City. They had a daughter, Jacklyn (1929-1937), who tragically died from pneumonia and meningitis at age 7, followed shortly thereafter by another family tragedy with a stillborn son in 1938. The marriage lasted for just short of 41 full years, ending with Fred's death on 18 January 1968. After her own passing in 1991, Hazel Provol was interred alongside her husband in the Hall of David section of the New Beth Olam Mausoleum at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
