In 2016 I received an e-mail from a lady who told me she had found my website on the internet and that her father had appeared in some films for Hal Roach. The lady was Virginia Gilbert, and her father was Dick Gilbert. After some exchanged mails she gave me her telephone number and invited me to call her if I wanted to talk to her. I took her up on the offer and we had a lovely conversation where she recalled working on an Our Gang picture and telling me all about her memories of the studio. As we got to know each other a little better Virginia (or 'Fran' as I knew her) offered to send me a huge selection of her personal photographs of her father during his time where he worked for the Hal Roach Studios. She also told me of how her father was a boxer as well and a little more about him. I promised Fran that I would honor her father by publishing these images from her personal collection and put them on my website. Unfortunately just a couple of months after we spoke I received the news from her grandson that Fran had suddenly passed away. She was 91 years old. The photos published on this page are all high resolution scans of photos, stills and articles that Fran sent me before she left us. They are listed in no particular order. All images have been scaled down from their original sizes. |
