American child actor, who in adulthood worked as an accountant for 50 years. He is an interesting case in that he went by two names: he was apparently born as William Stanley Harkness, but alternately went by Charles Aredale Harkness. Two years after his birth, he gained a little brother, also named William (specifically, William Brewster Harkness, Jr., directly after their father), so this most certainly explains why he began going by Charles/Charley. His World War II draft registration card (signed 16 Oct 1940) gives both names, although Charles Aredale is the one on the main name line; going by his California Death Index entries, his death certificate evidently does the same, though per his obituary, Charles A. appears to be the main name he used in life. His father, William Brewster Harkness, Sr. (1873-1941), worked in motion pictures as a stenographer (1920 Census) and as an "author" (1930 Census); Charles' older brother Kenneth is a motion picture actor in the 1930 Census. The Harknesses are residing in Culver City in the 1920 Census, and William, Sr.'s 1924 voter registration entry gives a Culver City address; in the 1930 Census, they are living in Santa Monica. In the 1920 Census, the Harkness family is directly below the Saenz family, including Gabe, on the same sheet. |
