Canadian-born actor and film crewman. He moved to California in 1919 and worked for Universal Pictures in the 1920s as an actor, technician, and electrician. In 1935, he was named secretary-treasurer of the National Greyhound Racing Association, a position he served in for five years followed by acting as a presiding judge at several Florida greyhound racing tracks. In later years, he and his last wife, Ruth, ran a bail bond agency. He was married five times and had two sons. His first marriage was to stenographer Florence Kingston (1892-?) in 1910 in Toronto. Marriage #2 was to Violet Elizabeth Fleming (1894-1917) in 1913 in Fort Morgan, Colorado; they had a son, Bernard Joseph Crozier (1915-2008), but appear to have split shortly thereafter. A few months after Barney's next marriage, Viola was killed in an automobile accident. The third knot-tying was to Celia Ruth Bradfield (1900-1979) in 1917 in Lamoni, Iowa; with Celia, Barney had his second son, Phillip Bernard Crozier (later Phillip Bernard Kinney, 1917-1993). Celia divorced Barney in 1921, giving cause as "cruel and inhuman treatment." Union #4 was with Lasky Studio (Paramount) hairdresser Fay Wormeth (1888-1973) in 1924 in Hollywood; they were divorced and living apart by 1930. The fifth time proved the charm when Barney wed Ruth Anna Rhonemus Koppel (1892-1955) in 1935 in Vancouver, Washington; this marriage lasted until Barney's death in 1951. Perhaps to hide his unnaturalized alien status, he later claimed he was born in Saginaw, Michigan. In the 1930 Census, he claimed to be born in Iowa. |
