Babe Green

born: 25 June 1897
Kansas City, Missouri,
United States of America
died: 20 March 1950
Los Angeles, California,
United States of America
(cerebral thrombosis, age 52)

American actor who mostly worked in films as an extra. During the two-year period of 1928-1929, he was the busiest and highest-earning male extra working in Hollywood, working 445 days and earning an average of $46.95 a week (in 2022, that'd be over $800 a week); he was the second most successful overall extra in that time, behind an actress named Jane Arden (whose 464 days in 1928-29 earned her an average of $47.45 a week). In 1939, he worked 30 weeks and earned a total of $2,750 (nearly $60,000 in 2022), per the 1940 Census.
Describing the wardrobe of a successful extra, an article noted that he "owns full dress, tuxedo, sport suits, military uniforms, cutaway, knickers, riding habit and every sort of ordinary clothing." Both a 1930 article and his 1942 WWII draft registration card give Green's height as 5'11", his weight as 170 lb, and his eye color as blue; the 1930 article says he has "gray and brown" hair, while his 1942 draft card just says gray hair.
Various articles from 1930-31 give his real name as "Myron C. Green"; per various vital and census records, his first name was actually Marion. He was a World War I veteran, serving in the Signal Corps in France and reaching the rank of Corporal. In his hometown of Kansas City, he graduated from the Kansas City School of Law, worked as a car salesman, and partly owned the Green Grocery company, a wholesale grocery firm (his father, James Green, was an "early day wholesale grocer" in Kansas City). He arrived in Hollywood and began working in films in 1922.
Green died at 1:05pm on 20 March 1950 at Los Angeles County General Hospital. His death certificate gives his full cause of death as "left middle cerebral thrombosis" (duration: 10 days) due to arteriosclerosis and chronic alcoholism (duration of both unknown). It also gives his date of birth as the 24th, although Green himself gave the 25th on other records including his WWII draft reg. card. He is interred at Mount Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery in his hometown of Kansas City.
